10 science fiction films whose plot lied to us

The twentieth century has given us many science fiction films. They reflected the hopes, dreams and fears of society and demonstrated interesting, but often far-fetched theories about what lies ahead for humanity. Some films almost rightly showed life in the 21st century, but there were blockbusters that were completely and completely wrong in their “predictions”. Here top 10 films that showed the future completely wrong.

10. Blade Runner

This is one of the best sci-fi movies of the 80s. The main role was played by Harrison Ford, whose character - Rick Deckard - is an employee of the department, identifying cyborgs, "replicants", almost indistinguishable from people. The events of the film take place in 2019. Of course, he still has two years left, but it is unlikely that science and technology during this time will go so far forward to provide us with humanoid robots, flying cars and extraterrestrial colonies. It has recently been announced that the film will continue. Events in it will develop 30 years after the completion of the plot of the main picture. And only time will tell whether in real life thirty years later things will be similar to what we see in the new Blade Runner.

9.2001: Space Odyssey

The film, shot back in 1968, and in our time is considered as one of the greatest examples of cinema science fiction of all time. Stanley Kubrick was able to accurately depict many technologies that were futuristic at the time, but quite commonplace now. For example, a phone case is very similar to a laptop or tablet. The reason the tape got to this list is because we are not sending people to Mars yet, not to mention Jupiter, and in 2001 there were definitely no such advanced computers as HEL-9000.

An interesting fact: to simulate the lunar surface, Kubrick ordered to import, wash and repaint several tons of sand. And the movements of the astronauts, weightlessness and the moon landing scenes look incredibly believable in the picture. And there are still persistent rumors that in the 1970s, Kubrick took part in the so-called “lunar conspiracy” - the filming of the alleged landing of American astronauts on the moon.

8. 2012

This film, released in 2009, exploited fears about the ancient Mayan prediction that the history of the world would end in 2012 (their calendar ended on 12/21/2012). But you are reading this text now, in 2017, which means that the prediction has not come true. However, this does not apply to the film, where the core of the Earth warmed up, which led to dramatic moments: climate change, earthquakes, the shift of tectonic plates, tsunamis and the eruption of the Yellowstone super-volcano. Some of these events may occur separately, but are unlikely to threaten us all together in the near future. In fact, all the speculation about 2012 and the coming end of the world was utter nonsense. The Mayans did not predict that the end of the world would come on December 21, 2012. The long Mayan calendar countdown ended that day ... and another began. So the end of the world is postponed indefinitely.

7. Back to the Future II

When reviewing this film, I just want to say, "Sorry, Marty, we all overslept." In 2015, according to the film, there were: hoverboards, Nike self-lacing sneakers, flying cars and other technologies that do not exist now (although there was a limited release of Nike Air MAGS self-lacing sneakers created in honor of the film). But in "Back to the Future II" the appearance of video chat was predicted, although in reality they are not carried out on such large screens.

6. Terminator

The Terminator from the first film set off to kill Sarah Connor from 2029. And later, in the movie “Terminator: May the Savior Come,” it says that the war against cars has been waged since 2018, but began long before that. Fortunately, there are currently no machines like the Terminator. However, the danger of the existence of artificial intelligence has long been the subject of heated debate, and the Terminator franchise has shown us the worst fears in this regard.

5. Patrol of time

The action-packed science fiction film about the policeman (played by Jean-Claude Van Damme), which regulates the course of time and prevents changes in the events of the past. As planned by the scriptwriters, time travel became possible by 2004. Alas, this idea was refuted more than ten years ago. Even now, the idea of being able to travel in time is largely science fiction. However, the “Time Patrol” showed cars that drive without a driver and respond to voice commands, and these ideas in 2017 no longer seem fantastic. The technology of voice recognition and control with its help of various devices is constantly being improved, and development is underway to drive cars without human intervention. Perhaps, in the end, these two technologies will be combined, which will lead to the emergence of cars that can simply be said, “let's go there” and enjoy a comfortable ride in the passenger seat.

4. Rollerball

According to the plot of the film in 2018 there will be a society controlled by corporations, and the main entertainment will be the game the deadly Rollerball, full of furious tricks and special effects. Well, there is still time left until 2018, but for some reason there is confidence that this fantastic film lied to us.

3. Death Race 2000

The similarity of this film to Rollerball is that the world of the future is obsessed with a deadly sport for no good reason. Mortal Racing 2000 was released in 1975 and depicts a society in which one of the few forms of entertainment is the bloody competition held in 2000. This sport was supposed to help control overpopulation, and drivers earned points by moving innocent pedestrians. Better the good old NASCAR.

2. Escape from New York

According to the writers, in 1997, Manhattan became a huge maximum security prison. This idea was rather strange, but the “Escape from New York” with the brilliant Kurt Russell was liked by the audience and in 1996 a sequel was released entitled “Escape from Los Angeles”, where a similar idea was exploited. That is, in 2013, Los Angeles became an autonomous island, to which people who were objectionable to the government referred. Well, now 2017 and New York is one of the largest and most beautiful cities in the world.

1. Mad Max

Events in the films “Mad Max”, according to one of the interviews with George Miller, took place from the late 90s to 2018. The world has become an abandoned wasteland, ruled by bandits. It is not yet clear what led to this apocalypse, due to which radioactive fallout began to occur and the climate changed dramatically. However, it is very good that this film lied to us and so far everything is in order with the Earth.
